If you’ve been practicing leatherworking, then you know by now that no matter what project you do, you’ll always end up with some leather scraps at the end of it. Rather than letting these scraps go to waste, however, you can use them. Here are five creative ways to use your scrap leather to always get the most out of your leather hides.
One of the best projects for beginners is making a beautiful wallet or coin purse out of your leftover leather materials. It’s an efficient way to use your scrap leather and makes for a great gift if you have no need for a new wallet or purse yourself.
A leather phone case is valuable, even when made from scraps. Leather has a high-impact absorption rate, meaning it will protect your phone well in the event you accidentally drop it. Leather is also pleasant to touch and easy to grip. Plus, with materials like leather, you can also customize and design the phone case however you like for a personalized look.
If you have long pieces or strips left over, then another simple yet creative way to use your scrap leather is by making belts. Leather has long been the gold standard for belts, meaning it’s bound to be a quality use of your scraps. Veg tan leather is especially good for making belts, but chrome tan leather works too.
Leather conchos, which are small round medallions, can be made with small pieces of leather. You can laser engrave these leather pieces to add an even more personal touch. By using smaller scraps that may otherwise be thrown away, you not only reduce waste but also create something special and memorable.
Scrap-leather keychains can be incredibly helpful for keeping track of and organizing your keys—plus, they make great accessories! Scrap-leather keychains are also handy when you’re traveling, as you can use them as luggage tags. However, even if you don’t need those practical applications, keychains are a fun way to add style and flair to your personal items.
